Most algae production uses an open-pond system which is less expensive to operate but can leave the algae exposed to pollution in the air. Astavita's astaxanthin is cultivated in a totally clean environment, using our patented, enclosed BioDome system in Maui, Hawaii and in photobioreactors in Gustavsberg, Sweden. With a closed system, we can protect our algae from environmental pollutants and assure absolute purity.
Our BioDomes are climate-controlled systems that regulate light, temperature and water to get the highest astaxanthin yield possible. In fact, our algae regularly attain a level of 5-6% astaxanthin – more than double that achieved with the traditional open-pond system.
